  1. I am researching my family genealogy and have several members that were born in Ellijay and most buried in Ellijay, So far I go back to Robert Gaines Roberts, born 1794 and my tree has 15 more Roberts as well as Penland, Craigo, White and Withrow last names. If you could furnish me with any information such as a listing of graves in Ellijay Cemetery I would greatly appreciate the help. I will gladly pay any expense you may have. I thank you for your effort.

I am looking for any info on William Burk born 1857/1860 Gilmer Co, Ga. and died 1923 in Okla. He is listed listing with Benjamin & Elizabeth Burke in 1860 Gilmer Co., Ga. I’m assuming this is his grandparents. Their kin somehow. Benjamin & Elizabeth are listed as 73 years old. In 1870 William Burk is listed on the Fannin Ga census living with Moses & Martha Morgan. My grandmother, Sarah DeRenda (Byrd) Whitfield said that Dora Mary (Burk) Whitfield, her mother-in-law told her that her father William Burk was adopted by Moses & Martha Morgan but promised they wouldn’t change his last name. And his name is listed as William Burk on the 1870 census. I am trying to find out who William Burks parents are and why he ended living with Benj & Eliz. Burk and then the Morgan family. I’ve been working on this for over 30 years and I’m no closer now than I was 5 years ago.

  3. I am researching my Great-great Grandfather James Chadwick. I am trying to determine who his parents were. James Chadwick was born in Carteret County in North Carolina in 1827. He is listed in the Gilmer County census for both the 1870 and 1880. Rev. James “Jim” or “Jamie” Chadwick was married to Lavina Evaline Cantrell on Nov. 12, 1857 in Gilmer County, GA. Their son, David Franklin Chadwick, is buried with his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Walker Chadwick , at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery off Mt. Zion Road in Ellijay, GA. David Franklin Chadwick served as Deacon for thirty-three years at Mt.Zion Baptist Church and most of the Chadwick family are buried there. James and Lavina Evaline are my great-great grandparents, and they were both buried in the Pettit Family Cemetery in Ellijay. James belonged to Mt. Zion Baptist Church since 1859 and was a member for 60 years. He died at 92 years of age. The state of Georgia does not find a death certificate. They only began the practice in 1919. James Chadwick died July 3, 1919.

  4. I’m looking for information on my great great grandmother, Sarah Alice Stokes, born 6/7/1860 in Gilmer County, GA, and died 8/27/1920.

    1. Hi Lee, I just chanced upon this post of yours from last year. I believe Sarah Alice was a younger sister of my great-grandfather, Thomas G. Stokes. There are a lot of publicly available records for the family and a photo of Sarah and her husband Ambros Young Griffin has been posted to Find-a-Grave memorial #5608071. I would be happy to share anything I have with you if you contact me.

      1. Looking for information on unknown father of William E. Couch. William was born 1823 and can be found in the 1850 censes, Gilmer County, along with his wife Mary Littleton Couch and children.

    2. Try scrounged town Baptist Church in Ellijay. You will find a lot of Chadwicks buried there. My grandfather was Joseph Franklin chadwick his father was Dennis Chadwick. His father was James Chadwick.

  5. If anyone has any information on Carwiley (Carwile) Crow (b abt 1817) and his wife/wives Delaney and/or Lucyndia Bridges, please let me know. I believe him to be my second great-grandfather. He is listed in the Gilmer county 1870 census with wife Delaney Bridges and again in the 1880 Gilmer census with wife Lucyndia Bridges. I am not sure if Delaney and Lucyndia is the same person or maybe sisters.
Also, one of his daughters, Amarentha in the 1880 census states she was sick with Typhoid Fever. I am trying to find out if this person died.
I have been unable to find this family for sure after 1880. I believe they may have went to Alabama.
    Thank you.
    Debra Chapman

  6. Traci Harvey-Morozko

    Allen A HARVEY
Born about 1784 Rowan County NC, died about 1850 in Gilmer County, GA, subdivision 33, (sometime after the 1850 US Census). Allen was married to Margaret (Peggy) Pearce-Harvey and was a farmer in Gilmer County. They had 9 children, I am specifically interested in their son, John P Harvey (my 3rd GGF). I have not been able to locate any information on Allen’s death. Any information (death, will, burial, land documents, etc) is greatly welcomed and appreciated.

    1. Tracie Harvey Posey

John P Harvey is also my 3rd G. Grandfather. i do have some info on him and Allen.

  7. I have a fairly extensive file on the Langleys who have lived in Gilmer Co., I have no John who was born in 1803 but one who was born in 1792 in N.C. Have a Lock Langley born 1805 in Ga. Both lived in Gilmer Co., Ga.

  8. I am searching for the parents of John Calvin Johnson (1876-1959). He married Jane Nancy Oliver 10.23.1898
they had two children, Callie Mae Johnson (1900-1977) and Millie J Johnson (1902- ) He married a second time to Josephine Alice Defoor 10.4.1903 they had 8 children for sure and possible a 9th. Willie Joseph Johnson (1904-1974),
Blumer George Johnson (1906-1973), Sylvia Johnson (1907-1909),Henry Columbus Johnson (1909-1996),Gordon Andrew Johnson (1910-1996), Stella Johnson (1912-1913), Dudley Cleveland Johnson (1914-1994), Jewel Edna Johnson Worley (1917-1988) and listed on the 1930 Census as a son Joe Brown Johnson- 10 yrs old.(no further records)
His mother is Sarah J. Odom and his father is unclear but records indicate William R. Johnson .
William R Johnson married Sarah J. Odom 4.9.1875 and William R Johnson married Sarah Catherine McMillian on 2.11.1869. There must be 2 William R Johnson’s because the birth of the children are intermingled. I can not locate a second W R Johnson. I spoke to Martha Stanley who suggests that one is William Russell Johnson (which I located at the Liberty Batist Church Cemetary in Gilmer County. Find a Grave records indicate that there is a void on both sides of Sarah J. Odom Johnson which could possible be an unmarked grave of the other William R (maybe Rasper) Johnson located at the Antioch Cemetary in Fannin County. I would appreciate any information that may lead to clearing up this mystery.

  9. Just found this site. My family who lived in Gilmer was the Marcus F. Bennett family, whose wife was Mary (some say she was a Bennett who married a Bennett. There children were Thomas H. (b. abt. 1837), Rawlin B. (b. abt. 1842), James A. (b. abt. 1843) Nancy M. (b. abt. 1845), Matthew C. (b. abt. 1847), Margaret (b. abt. 1852), and John S. (b.abt. 1855). The first 3 were born in South Carolina; the last probably in Gilmer Co. Marcus’s family was originally from Haywood Co. NC. Info on this family is appreciated. The family lived in the Mountaintown area near what is now the Murray County line.
Also, Gilmer County Genealogical Society has a website and Facebook page. They would be glad to try to help you obtain any info that is available in the Family Research Room at the Gilmer Library. Just send them a request.

  10. I’m looking for information about “G B Brookshire” aka “Bard Brookshire” who was born around the 1830s in Gilmer county and died between 1875 and 1880. His wife was Frances “Fannie” Ray (abt. 1836 to after 1880) and he had four children: George Barton Brookshire (3 Feb 1862 to 10 Dec 1940), Sarah Alice Brookshire (abt 1865 to ?), Jeter Brookshire (abt 1868 to ?), and Mary Josephine Brookshire (14 July 1875 to 16 Nov 1932). Family tradition has it he was at least part Cherokee.

  11. Reuben HOLLOWAY
I am looking for information, ideally the identity of his parents. He died in Gilmer, GA abt 1850. In a census report from Gilmer he identified SC as his birthplace(abt 1772). There is a lot of conflicting information about who his parents may have been on various genealogy websites and I was hoping that since he spent some time in Gilmer that someone may have some information.
    Thanks,
    Tim Holloway

  12. According to the Wallace Family History, Jesse Wallace and Sarah Wade had a daughter Rhoda who married Uriah Holden. I have seen a document that Jane Rackley was the mother of the Twins. There was a Jane Holden in the church record with Uriah for a few months in Gilmer CO and I can’t find anymore about her. She is more a possibility than Jane Rackley. Richard Holden and Jane Langley are not there parents as they moved to TX according to Nicholson Research.

  13. I’m search for information regarding Sarah Victoria Bryan Goble. She was called Tiny and her grave stone reads Tiny. She married TC Goble in 1904 and was my great grandmother. Please let me know if you have any information regarding Tiny.

  14. Clarence William Rogers
    Feb 6th 1921- Apr 28th 1951
I would love to know if anyone has information on my great grandfather Clarence William Rogers he served in ww2 and Korea I have 2 different draft records for ww2 that show he lied about his birth year on both, and on each was a different “person who will always know where I am” (1) Luria Ethel Bramlett, listed as his mother and (2) Bob Roger’s, listed as his stepfather.
His wife was my great grandmother Rosie Faye (Tipton) Rogers they had a son by the name Clarence William Rogers(Jr) who died in Vietnam in 1967, and a son named Jerry Roger’s.

  15. I am researching my family line of NICHOLSON/NICKELSON. My 2 great grandmother was Dora Nicholson, the daughter of Tom Nicholson. I believe if it is correct, he is buried at Talona Baptist Church cemetery. Does anyone have any information about his family? Dora his daughter, according to family history, had Cherokee blood in her. I am not convinced that she is full cherokee by any measure, but any information would be helpful.

    1. Dora Ann Nicholson born December 14, 1880 and died February 1953. The daughter of thomas Nicholson and Harriet Payne.
She married Jesse earl newberry and had 9 children.

  19. Researching the Lanning family, originating on Turniptown Rd. I have found alot of information and visited the Lanning family cemetery there but I am trying to find more information on my husband’s direct descendent, Joshua Thomas Lanning, also known as J.T. Lanning, b: 7/25/1847, d: 3/12/1918. I think he was a part of the State Guard but I can’t find any service or military records for him, but I have found a pension application with his name listed as J.T. Laning (spelling different). Any help you may offer will be greatly appreciated!!!

  20. Viola Holden Jones

I am researching the following names in Gilmer, Pickens, and Fannin COS. Will gladly share.
Holden, Earley, Patterson, Pettit, Tankersley, Bowen, McDaniel/McDonald, Green, Dillard, Beaver, Davenport, Long, Pack, Humphrey, Mashburn, Wallace,
Yarbrough/Yarberry, Nicholson, Robeson/Robison, Wishon, Tucker (Cherokee Indian), Holloway, Patton, Patterson, Sosebee, Hopkins, English, Jones, Hawkins, & Woody,

    1. I am researching my Worley line. Mary Jane Tankersley married Joseph Sylvester Worley in 1874 in Gilmer Country. I would be interested if you run across any of the Worley or Teague lines of Gilmer or Murray Counties in your family research.

      1. I am looking for my great-great-grandfather’s father, Thomas A. Bell. His mother’s name was Anna. She re-married Thomas J Williams in 1843 after her husband (Bell) died. Thomas A. Bell was a Methodist Circuit Rider for part of his life and a Baptist lay minister for a number of years.

      2. my great grandfather was Henry Worley of Gilmer and Murray Co. He was murdered by ”The White Caps” Late 1800s.Also have Tankersley and Teague kin

    2. I descend from the Tucker family through John (Consene) Tucker, his daughter Minerva Theresa Thomas nee Tucker, and her firstborn son William Posey Thomas listed with her in the 1860 US Census in Gilmer Co., GA. She is erroneously listed as Marva in 1860, William Posey Thomas, in the 1870 Gilmer Co US Census had stayed with his aunts & uncles on the family farm and his parents had moved up to Fannin County, GA. I am searching for any documentation beyond the 1860 US Census connecting Minerva/Marva & William Posey Thomas as mother & son. I have never found John Tucker’s parents.

      1. I see you’re looking for information on Patterson and Thomas. If you’ll contact Steve Patterson at Ball Creek baptist church, I know he can help you out. Sorry, I don’t have a number.

      2. Viola Holden Jones

I connect to John {Consene} Tucker through his daughter Permila Ann. I have information on Minerva that might be of help to you.

      3. Hi Tom,
Hiram & Minerva were married in Gilmer Co., GA in 1858. I see where Wm. Posey is with Hiram 22y and Marva (Minerva) 16y. Wm. is 4y, this being the 1860 Gilmer Co., GA Federal Census. I don’t think Minerva is his Mom, she would have been 12y at his birth. 1880 Floyd Co., GA Wm. P. and under him is Charles E. Charles E is listed in 1870 with Sarah C. Thomas 29y, sister? 1860 Charles E. is listed with a Sarah 50y. Sarah Brady m. Charles Thomas.
With the Indian Rolls, Wm. P. is not listed with Minerva and the rest of her children.
Hope this helps a bit. My husband connects to John Tucker and has done dna Family treedna-2007 & Ancestry-2019. He is from the family that moved to Indian Territory West (Adair Co., OK). John > Lewallen > Marcus > Adolphus > Eugene > Jerry

        1. Thanks. Yes I have all that too. I’ve researched the possibility Hiram & Minerva we’re keeping William Posey Thomas for one of Hiram’s siblings but nothing gives that indication.

Both Hiram and Minerva state they have no prior marriages in their individual Dawes enrollment questionnaires and 12 is very young, but not impossible.

Pure speculation, but with them not marrying until two years after William Posey Thomas being born, possible stigma of an illegitimate child combined with Hiram going off to the civil war, Minerva left him with Hiram’s mom and moved back with her people where you find them both in the 1870 census. There seems to be some family connection to Minerva as one of Minerva’s brothers 20 years later, gave his son the very same first and middle name, William Posey Tucker.

We may never know but until something else disproves it, I’m going with face value of the three being in the same household the 1860 US Census.

A cousin’s and I are attempting to research guardianship and adoption records in the slim chance there are hints there. Time will tell.

          Thanks again for responding.

      1. Viola Holden Jones

Rita, I am researching the Sosebee, English, Wishon, Patterson line and I would like to compare my research with you.

    3. Viola Jones, do you have any information about Robert S Patton born c 1821 in NC. He married Nancy Crawford Hubbard on Jan 12, 1851 in Union Co. Ga. Nancy had 2 daughters named Sarah Jane and Mary Malinda Hubbard, both by a previous marriage, but Mary Malinda took the Patton name when she married my great grandfather Joseph M. McClure. I do not know if your research includes the Pattons in Union Co Ga around 1851.
      Thank you for your time.
      Betty Mitchell

    4. I am seeking any information on the Robison/ Robeson family of Morganton, fannin county or surrounding areas. If you have had any luck on finding any genealogy information on this particular family name, will you please share with me? I would be forever grateful!

    5. My tree contains several of the same families from the same counties. The surnames we have in common are Earley, Green, Davenport, Beaver, Long, Yarbrough/Yarberry, & Nicholson. Contact me to compare.

      1. Hello,
John Tucker’s daughter Minerva Theresa & husband Hiram Brady Thomas had, in the 1860 US Census for Gilmer County, GA, a 4 year old boy named William P. (Posey) Thomas who I believe was a son born in their very early youth in 1856, actually 2 years before they legally married in 1858. They lived next door to Hiram’s mother & siblings. After Hiram went into the Civil War, Minerva moved to Fannin County but in the 1870 census, the now 14 year old boy is now still living in Gilmer County with his aunts & uncles, as his grandmother has died. Since the 1860 census did not list relationships, I am searching for additional documents proving William Posey Thomas to be the son of. Minerva Tucker Thomas. William Posey Thomas is my great grandfather. He died in 1897 in what is now Oklahoma when his daughter, my grandmother was 3 years old. She died 9 years before I was born. I wasn’t involved in my family history while any of my grandmother’s siblings were alive so I could not ask them about their father. Any additional documentation would be appreciated.

  21. I’m seeking information on Louisa Josephine PIERCE/PEARCE, the wife of my great grandfather, Joseph Andrew McClure.

She was born 11 June 1870 in Tennessee. She and Joseph McClure were married in Gilmer County in 1897. The 1930 Census indicates that she was married before, around 1887.

While I have information on Joseph Andrew McClure, I know almost nothing about his wife. before their marriage and their move to Oklahoma in the early 1900s.

I would appreciate any information or suggestions.

  22. Im looking for Sutherland (Southerland) family cemetery. My great-great grandparents James Wesley Darnell and Jane narcissus (Sutherland) Darnell are supposedly buried there. It’s going to be located near Ball Creek Baptist cemetery (not in BC cemetery). Possibly in Gilmer or Pickens County. Another source had it located near the town of Talking Rock.

  23. Richard H elliott

Benjamin “B.R.” Robert ELLIOTT died around 1905 while visiting his brother near Ellijay. He is buried in a small cemetery on private land, which some have said is Harper Cemetery. His mother, Hannah Elliott, is buried at Mountaintown Cemetery outside of Ellijay. Would like to know where he is buried and solve a family mystery that eluded my grandfather.

  24. I am looking for information about Anna M. Williams (Beall). She was my great-great-great grandmother. Her son was Thomas A. Bell, a Methodist Circuit Rider and later on, a Baptist lay minister. In 1850, she was a widow who married Thomas J. Williams, a widower ( his first wife was Hannah). We cannot find any records for her after this point. We think she may be buried in one of the cemeteries in Gilmer or Murray County, Georgia. Thomas Williams had a number of children before he married Anna. He died around 1886. She was still alive ( we think) around 1870. Thank you for any information you may care to share!

    1. I am finding a Thomas A Bell Baptist preacher in Habersham County Georgia in the 1860 census. His wife is Artimissa. There is a John Bell died in Tennessee listing Thomas A Bell and Artimissa McFarland as parents. John Bell this census is 6 mos old. There is a McFarland listed with this Thomas A in this census and also looks like Anna M. Williams age 55 and Visa L Williams and Cicena Williams. Cicena is showing born 1844 in North Carolina so if that is correct Williams and Anna could have been in North Carolina between their marriage in 1843 and 1850 census. It is interesting there is a William Bell and a Thomas Beall in the 1840 census Murray County 3 years before Anna married Williams with male children that could be the right age for Thomas A Bell. Not sure about this if any connection. You might could check for Thomas Beall grave in Murray County and see if maybe Anna is buried with her first husband there. Thomas Bell and Artimica Bell are showing in 1870 Tennessee census with the McFarland but without any Williamses, but there is an Ann Williams with a L? something 30 years old born in North Carolina living with her. Since Thomas was born in North Carolina as well as this Ann you might find info on the Bell marriage in North Carolina. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-698Q-FRS?i=31&wc=92KS-R98%3A518655501%2C518916301%2C518852903%3Fcc%3D1438024&cc=1438024 1880 Annie is shown living with Vica and Milligan Williams. I do not see Thomas bell nearby. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YBP-CV1?i=3&wc=QZ24- IR15%3A1589414125%2C1589395127%2C1589396405%2C1589395474%3Fcc%3D1417683&cc=1417683 Milligan Williams shows having died in Polk County Tennessee 1925 and being buried in pauper cemetery. In 1880 Thomas A Bell is in BeaverDam NC as a book vendor again with Artissima and the McFarland. John and George are sons listed who both died in Tennessee. Son,Bascomb Bell is living nearby. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YB2-9DMM?i=19&wc=QZ24-XWS%3A1589411027%2C1589394793%2C1589405200%2C1589396321%3Fcc%3D1417683&cc=1417683 This census says Thomas was born in Georgia. I can not find where Ann died or is buried. It is probably Tennessee or could be North Carolina.

      1. Thank you for all of the information. We have discovered much of this. I know that Thomas A. Bell and his mother lived in Habersham County around the year of his birth, 1822. I suspect his father died within the next few years. If that is the case, someone had to sign his death certificate…if there was one. I also think that he probably had land in that area, but I am not sure how to go about proving that. This is very difficult so I appreciate all for your help. if you think of another approach, please do not hesitate to let me know.

  25. Looking for any information on Nancy Rebecca Brown, my great, great Grandmother. She was purportedly was born in Ellijay, GA on 13 April, 1854 and later moved to Medicine Lodge, KS where she died on 13 July, 1939.

  26. John (Jay) Mooney

My Great Grand Father, James W. Mooney was from Georgia born in 1847. He was captured in Dallas, Ga shortly after enlisting and sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago. He married Sarah Adelia Stevenson and had four children including Charles Napoleon Mooney my fathers father. This James W Mooney is buried in Milan, Ohio where one of his daughters was born in 1885. He died in 1887. I found a James Wesley that was born to Jane Bates and Pleasant Parker in 1846 in Gilmer County. Pleasant Parker passed away in 1852 and Jane remarried in 1854 to Joshua Mooney. The 1860 Census shows Joshua, Jane and her children listed in Gilmer County but her childrens last name are listed as Mooney instead of Parker. This James Wesley is buried in Gilmer County and passed away in 1918. So there’s a conflict as far as the two James W Mooneys. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks , Jay.

  27. Viola Holden Jones

I am researching Uriah Holden (1793-1866) I found recently he was married to Rhoda Wallace not Rhoda Brookshire. Rhoda was the daughter of Jesse Wallace and Sarah Wade of SC. I have documentation on this should anyone need it. Uriah is not the Civil War Uriah B. that was his son. He is buried at Sugar Creek as was Rhoda and they have new corrected stones. One of the older descendants says this Holden family were in Yadkin Valley(Surry CO) NC. There was an older Robert Holden who came from England as a Tax Collector and was granted land in NC. He later was assigned to survey Carolina before is was separated into 2 states. This Robert was killed by Indians in 1817. He had 3 sons; however only one name is known,Joseph. Joseph and a Finley man made some trips with Daniel Boone into KY. Later Joseph had two son (Jack and Tom) who accompanied Daniel and Joseph had one son killed on this trip along with Daniel’s son. Joseph’s other son, in whom I am interested, was Jeff.
Robert was granted land in the area that joined SC and GA. I find some Holdens who live in that area that could connect to our Holden line. I have DNA for Uriah and Ozias and it does not match any of the other Holdens in Gilmer and Fannin. Would you like to help me research the Old Robert Holden descendants?

    1. here is a link to a google book detailing the Boone/Finley/Holden expedition. I just googled Daniel Boone and Joseph Holden and several links resulted. Turns out Finley’s first name was John. I will try to do some more looking.

  28. LONG family.
I am searching for information for my grandmother, Margaret Adline Long, born Nov. 30, 1874, Gilmer County, Ga. I know she lived in Leaches district along with her husband, Riley A. Bradley, as listed on census report if 1900. From what I have determined, she was the daughter of Peter Long. I am not certain if I have the correct Peter Long. I would specifically like to be able to determine if she was of the Cherokee nation as we were told for many years. Any information would be appreciated.

  38. J. Harry Sutherland

    SUTHERLAND Family

I am in the process of writing a book on the Sutherland Family. Moses data is kinda hard to come by. Do you have any information on him? He is buried in Mt. Pisgah Cem. He died in 1932. He was married to Tarrey Medlin, she is buried next to him. Moses was minister at Flat Creek Bapt. Church near the county line. This is about all I have on him. Thank you for any help.

    1. Mr J. Harry Sutherland,
I think this link will be for Moses Sutherland death certificate. The last name of the spouse is different but alot of times people gave wrong information. The date lists 1933 as year of death. The first name of the spouse is close enough to be considered. It gives his parents names and that they were born in South Carolina. Sutherlands and Hendrix families have a long history. In researching my husband’s McGill side, I find that his wife was a Roper and there was some connection between them and Moses Hendrix. Hendrix, Sutherland, Trotters, Mcgills, and Ropers are often interconnected. Susan Trotter sold land said to belong to Ansel McGill for the estate of Moses Hendrix. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJXM-X62J

My husband is also kin to Douthitts on his Davis side.

It appears if it is the correct Moses (MT Sutherland) He was wounded in the Civil war at Ft. Harrison VA and again later and my husband’s great grandfather J F (James Francis) McGill signed a witness statement. http://cdm.georgiaarchives.org:2011/cdm/compoundobject/collection/TestApps/id/465987/rec/3

I have the following from census data: 1880 – William Sharp (40) married to Liddia (Lydia?) M (36) with children Harriot (11), Robert R (7), Ideler (5), Harly (2), Charly (2mo). 1870 – W M Sharp (31) married to Lydia M (25) with children John W H (3) and Harriettt E (1). This is most likely the same family as the one above. James Sharp (67) married to Margaret (67) James H Sharp (22) married to Elizabeth (22) with children Mary M (6mo) and Harriett (1). John M Sharp(44) married to Clerisa (43) with children Laura (15), Margaret (13), Tabitha (10), and Levada (7). 46. Rachel Minerva NEWTON

I am looking for the parents of Rachel Minerva Newton. She was the first wife of Joseph Marion Withrow. Rachel was born on September 8 1835 and died on October 1887 in Fannin County, GA. She’s buried in the Salem #2 Baptist Church cemetery. My grandfather said that his grandfather, Joseph M. Withrow, ran off with a servant girl and his grandmother died of a broken heart??

    1. I think this is Rachel in the 1880 Fannin County census. One of the children is Joseph M. Withrow who is 11. Should be on the left side near the top of the page. If it doesn’t open to it right, the link to put in and search is You probably have seen his findagrave memorial:
      http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=58757370
It is my understanding that divorces were very uncommon in those days and you had to get one from the legislature so he probably didn’t remarry until after Rachel died, he went to the legislature,or he was a bigamist. Note his children with Rachel are not listed on the findagrave.
I am not sure the dates of birth are correct in this 1900 census, but it has Mollie and Joseph married 5 years.
      https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M3N2-WSQ
I have an appointment and have to stop looking for now. Good luck. https://archive.org

The next time he is found on the census is 1900. He is listed as a boarder, 28 years old, born March 1872 . He is living with William Elliott who is a son of Lakey Elliott. The census list Pinkney as having been born in Georgia, his father as having been in North Carolina and his mother as having been born in Georgia. Pinkney’s wife Harriett Craig Langley in 1900 is living with her Aunt Synthia Densmore (54 years old) and Aunt Mary Elliott (56 years old). Mary was Lakey Elliott’s second wife. Same Lakey as above. The Langley children were all living with Synthia Densmore, Caroline, David, Isabel and Pink. Tilton Avery wasn’t born until 1903. Harriett is listed as a widow in the 1920 census. If you think this could be the family you are looking for, let me know and I could send you a full genealogy report.

  69. Samuel CARVER

Am looking for families of Samuel Carver and Mary Logan. Samuel died in 1857 where unknown, father may have been William Carver. Samuel married Mary Logan, her father Joseph Logan in 1849 in Gilmer County. She had brothers Zaddock Packard Logan and Jasper Newton Logan. Have no other information on Samuel but heard their names was in a book of early northern settlers in Georgia. Any information would be greatly appreciated, these are my gr-gr-grandparents.

  70. Elizabeth BROWN

1850 Gilmer County page 879 House # 1308 Elizabeth Brown age 52 widowed? no husband, my great great Grandmother, with sons: William M. Brown age 21, Francis Calloway age 20, Jane E.age 19, John N. age 17, Susannah C. age 15, Mary Ann age 13, and last Chesly D. age 12(Chester) my Great grandfather. I have located almost all of Chesly’s wife and children, and also Francis Calloway (male) but would dearly love to locate Elizabeth’s husband. If any of you researchers in Gilmer have Brown relatives who could possibly help it would end this many years of research. Elizabeth does list herself as widowed in 1860 with a new sibling added age 16 year old Martin. Was Martin left off in 1850 or was he a missed child? Or was one of the other siblings misnamed?

  71. John R. BROOKS

Looking for any information on the John R. Brooks family. Believe they had at least one daughter when they lived there in 1904-1905, thought to be where John Calvin, son was born. Seeking birth record for John Calvin Brooks, B. Feb 23, 1905 thought to be in Gilmer Co. Son of John Rolin and Nettie Devaney Brooks. Had at least one daughter, Mae Brooks, who was born in TN. Any lead on them would be helpful. John and Nettie were my grandparents. Moved on to Gordon County by 1909.

  72. William S. BAILEY

I am researching my gr. grandfather, William S. Bailey b. abt. 1841 North Carolina. I found a William S. Bailey b. 1840 living with William Kelly and family in Gilmer County, Georgia. They are on the 1860 Gilmer County, Georgia census. My William S. Bailey is on the 1870 Beaufort County, NC census living with a female. I have been unable to find him on any other census for NC. His father was, I was told, Isaac Bailey, but I have no proof of this. William Samuel Bailey died in 1897 NC. He married Neily (Cornelia) Ann Lilly on 21 Dec. 1876 at Long Acre, Beaufort Co., NC. I have their children’s names if anyone is interested.
