Liberality to the Smith Guards. CAMP LEE, March 6, 1862.
  Mr. Editor: In these days of patriotism, when the names of so many are made public as the munificent donors of important benefits to the various volunteer companies, allow me to commend a few of the friends of the Wilkinson county Smith Guards, (Company G.) 2d Regiment, G.S.T.  This company was mustered into service at Camp Harrison in Ocober last, and since its first enlistment has been the constant care and attention of many warm and generous friends-among whom you will allow me to mention, in particular, Col. John Smith, of Wilkinson county, who uniformed the company at his own expense. Messrs. A. McAllum, of Twiggs county, J. N. Wall, of Wilkinson county, and Lieut. L. J. H. Vinson, of the company, contributed the fund to purchase caps, &c; and the "Turkey Creek Soldiers Relief Society," of Wilkinson county contributed 37 pairs socks.
  The Smith Guards feel themselves under many obligations to these generous friends, and while their services are needed by the State, and they continue in the right minds, they will never cease to be grateful.
  Let others follow their example, and be assured the soldiers called to defend the country will not suffer. R. S. STOREY,

  It is our pleasing duty to acknowledge the reception of a lot of the most beautiful knit socks from the Association above named. We have adopted this more public method of returning our thanks to you, that others may see that no selfish motive induced you to send this work of our own fair hands for the relief of many an unknown soldier; for though the same county is our home, we are unknown to you, except as defenders of the one great cause. No one can say of your Association that it was the love of a wife or sister that suggested the idea or proved a stimulus to your nimble fingers, in the execution of this truly patriotic act. How praiseworthy, then, is your example-willing alike to take us who are comparative strangers to you, and place us on the list of soldier, husband or brother, to be remembered in your acts of kindness for them, and cheer us in our desponding hours by that most pleasant thought that "we are remembered at home,"
  We would mention another fact to prove to you why this act of kindness is so highly appreciated, viz: because we have received no assistance from our county excepting Fifty Dollars from Mr. D. N. Smith, and Five Dollars from Mr. Whitehurst, (but from a gentleman and lady, who requested that their names should not be known, we received One Hundred and Fifty Dollars.) The paltry sum of Fifty-five Dollards is all that the Oconee Grays, can boast of having received from our patriotic (to five other companies) county.
  Allow me, ladies, to return to you our heartfeld thanks. May your sons prove as valiant on the field as you are generous and patriotic at home.
