History

From Byron McCook's book about Snow Hill Cemetery
"James (Jim) Snow came to Wilkinson County from what is believed to have been Surry County, North Carolina. He came with his brother Richard and there could have been others.  He married Mary (Polly) McCook, daughter of Daniel McCook and Rachel Hamilton.  Jim bought the land from Rev. Daniel McCook before he moved to Fitzgerald, Ga. There was a grave yard on the land.  It was the McCook Family.  So Jim probably ended up named it Snow.  And because it was on a hill, named it Snow Hill.  He cared for it a long time.

I would like to tell you what I have seen and heard about Snow Hill Cemetery.  The information about  when it was started was told to me by my Great Great Grandmother, Winnie Brannan McCook.  She was born in 1801 and died in 1895.  She was the grave yard was started about 1820.  The oldest one we know was Daniel McCook, who was the third one to be put there in 1824.  He was born in 1751.  As you can see around the area, there are a lot of old graves.

The land around here was owned by Rev. Daniel McCook, who was a Methodist preacher in 1848. (Rev. Daniel McCook was the son of the Daniel McCook (the one buried at Snow Hill) and Mary McKenzie.)  He bought 10 acres of land from Bryant Wood and Rachel Smith and gave that land to Laura Branch to build a church, Laurel Branch.  He sold his land to James Snow, who was his son-in-law.  He and his wife, Rachel moved to Ben Hill County and lived there until they died (that is also where they are buried).

I do not know when it was changed to Snow Hill.  It was sometime after James Snow bought the land. Different families started using it (Smith, Beck, Fountain, Snow, Etheridge, etc...)

A school house was built next to the cemetery on the property of Jackson land.  When the school was closed in the late 1920 or Early 30's, the students went to Mount Carmel."
