Ida Jane Walters
Toler (1885 – 1943) and her sister Nan Lou Walters (1887-1935)
taken in 1902, when both the girls were
teenagers. They were the daughters of
Thomas and Frances “Fannie” Underwood Walters.
Ida Jane married my grandfather,
William Henry Howell Toler (1870 – 1949),
in Jan. 1906 after what I’m told was an
uncommonly long courtship. (Her parents
thought he was too old for her, or, alternately,
that he was too much the rake.) The
story behind the photo goes that Ida Jane (seated)
was reading a love letter from “Mr. Toler,”
and her sister Nan, reading over her shoulder,
is promising not to tell. Ida Jane
eventually did marry her true love and Nan Lou,
who never married, went on to become a nurse,
respected professional woman in a time when
such was most uncommon.
